The clear blue waters surrounding Key West and the Lower Florida Keys have much to offer scuba divers, snorkelers and anglers. There is no place else in the United States to see so many species of marine life in one spot. Wrecks and reefs, both artificial and natural coral, are home to hundreds of species of tropical and game fish. Just north of the Lower Keys, the waters are shallow and hold tarpon, bonefish, permit, shark and barracuda. Among the wrecks and reefs, you can catch snapper, grouper, cobia and kingfish.

Many travelers have visited Key West and a number have chosen to make Key West their home. Here are a few visitor descriptions and some comments about Key West for those who are interested.

In 1891 Lucie Vannevar visited and wrote a description which appeared in The Key West Daily Equator-Democrat.

"In very truth Key West is the most charming, as it is the most quaint of American cities, and some day Fashion will set her seal upon it.

Like some fair woman, none know Key West but to love her. . . "

Many Jimmy Buffet fans believe that Key West is Margaritaville, a paradise with palm trees, ocean breezes, island music, beaches and thatch roof bars on the shore by a turquoise sea. "There also has to be lots of lies and stories and it all should blend together like tequila, salt and limes." For Jimmiy Buffett his Margaritaville is "less a place than a state of mind." When asked where Margaritaville is Buffett answers,

"When you are there, you will know it."

Visit Key West and decide for yourself. Whether visiting or residing in the Keys there is a lot to experience. In your planning include some activities which focus on nature. In addition to enjoying the warm weather and tropical waters, consider going on a snorkel trip to the only tropical reef in the Continental United States or perhaps a dolphin encounter, or a kayaking ecology tour of mangrove islands and marine life. Try fishing and sample local seafood offered by wayside restaurants. Enjoy a sunset celebration at a local watering hole. Among the many attractions be sure to visit Key West and take the Conch Train. The city of Key West is the county seatof Monroe County. The county consists of a section on the mainland which is almost entirely in Everglades National Park, and the Keys islands from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas.

Home to the only living coral reefs in America, and plants and animals that are seen nowhere else in the United States, the Keys are a memorable experience. You'll want to explore the underwater sea life that exist in these crystal blue waters and wander through the many national state parks that are throughout the Florida Keys.

Incomparable diving and snorkeling, excellent food and shopping, unforgettable sunsets, first class fishing, music, festivals, all in one of the most laid-back atmospheres you will ever encounter – that's what you will find when you come to the Florida Keys.

Key West is also known as the Conch Republic. The Conch Republic was born on April 23, 1982, after the U.S. Border Patrol blockaded the Keys with a "border." Mayor Dennis Wardlow seceded Key West from the Union, declared War, then surrendered demanding Foreign Aid; creating "The People Who Seceded Where Others Failed." Each April, Key West celebrates Conch Republic Days to commemorate our succession from the Union in 1982.
